The Smart Way to Wear a White Shirt

Every wardrobe needs a classic white shirt. Here’s how to wear yours well

Who could forget Sharon Stone wearing her husbands white shirt with a long satin skirt at the Oscars? The fact that this was way back in 1998 shows you just how much a fashion classic a simple white shirt is.

Whether it’s silk, linen or cotton, add one to your wardrobe for instant style.

If you’re wearing a skirt or classic pants, your white shirt will look best tucked in. With skinny jeans, try it worn loose or half tucked in. The shirtsleeves should be rolled to a point just above or below your elbow. Either keep the second button undone or button the shirt right to the top. A white shirt can be worn as a long belted tunic over narrow-legged pants, or outer layering over another top. Look for a fit that’s slim, but not too tight. White looks good with anything – from black and white to denim and white – or paired with printed pants. White on white works beautifully; just add pops of colour with accessories. See the fashion feature White + Bright = Gorgeous in our March 2014 issue for some inspiration.
