The search for Queenspark’s next plus-size model is nearly over, and in the process we’ve encountered hundreds of beautiful women eager to celebrate their curves. More than 300 ladies submitted photos of themselves, and three finalists have been selected through a public voting system, with input from Queenspark.
To qualify, entrants had to be at least 172cm tall, between the ages of 21 and 35, and between size 14 and 18 (South African sizes). The final winner will be featured in Queenspark campaigns, including a full-page, full-colour advertisement in the March 2017 edition of Good Housekeeping and Goeie Huishouding.
We met up with the three finalists, who recently attended a shoot in Cape Town, to get to know them a bit better. Don’t forget to pick up our March 2017 edition from 22 February 2017 to find out which model in the trio claimed the title.
THEMBELA SIFILE, 27, KHAYELITSHA, CAPE TOWN
Do you have a history in modelling?
No, I have never had a professional shoot in my life.
What inspired you to enter the Queenspark/Good Housekeeping plus-size model search?
I was advised by my manager at work, who has always seen a model in me.
How did you feel about the whole experience?
The news that I am a finalist came just at the right moment because I was going through a very hard time in my life. The competition has really lifted my spirit and I have gained a lot of confidence through this process. So, even if I don’t win, I know I will walk away with something no one can take from me.
What was the shoot like?
I enjoyed each and every moment. The ladies on set were very helpful and made me feel so comfortable. The make-up artist was extremely professional and great at enhancing my features. I learnt a lot about make-up and which products suit my skin tone. Overall, it was just a wonderful experience – one that I would like to repeat.
What are your hopes for the future?
I hope that this competition will open doors for me in the future. I think the industry as a whole definitely does lack plus-size models.
