Rock Girl invites you to join them at the Grand Daddy Hotel as they open their doors to a worthy cause

The full moon on Monday June 4 will herald another one-of-a-kind 10km Full-Moon Bike Ride, sponsored and hosted by The Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street, Cape Town. This will be in support of The Rock Girl Safe Spaces initiative, which is a grassroots public art and education campaign to raise awareness about the need for safe spaces in our cities and surrounding communities.  Rock Girl is partnering with artists and designers to create unique public benches that will serve as symbolic safe spaces.

Registration is from 17h30 and the cycle starts at the hotel at 18h30.  No need to book unless a hired bike is required. The ride is open to the public and accommodates cyclists of all ages and capabilities. The cost is R50 and includes the cycle ride, BOS iced tea, snacks at The Grand Daddy and entertainment from the Nomadic Orchestra. A live auction will follow in the venue from 19h30 – Paul du Toit’s artwork, a two-night stay at the Grand Daddy Hotel & Old Mac Daddy as well as other valuable items will come under the hammer.

The Safe Spaces campaign is part of the 2014 World Design Capital bid. The first bench was showcased at the Design Indaba in February 2011 and in February 2012 ten benches were showcased at the Indaba. The first bench is now permanently located at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and its sister bench is in Khayelitsha.  With the help of Mayor Patricia De Lille, Cape Town Partnership, Investec, Travelstart, the Wallace Global Fund, Table Mountain National Park, the V & A Waterfront, Plascon/Earthcote, Cecile and Boyd and many others, there are now 30 Safe Spaces benches in and around Cape Town.

Each bench will have a sister bench located in a previously disadvantaged community that is providing an actual safe space.  The benches are functional, educational, beautiful, and inspirational.  We hope to inspire and motivate citizens from all walks of life to find ways to ensure that women and girls – and thus everyone – are safe from violence.

The Safe Spaces campaign was inspired by a group of Grade 7 girls from Manenberg.  With support from local artists and parents, as well as in kind donations from Freeworld Design Centre and Cecile and Boyd, the learners painted murals, installed their own Safe Spaces bench, renovated their toilets, and built an art room, beginning a transformation of their entire school.  They have discovered that young women can be leaders in their own communities and can inspire others around the country.
