Here’s how to take your hair from flat and lifeless to full of bounce and volume

1. Condition correctly

If you have fine or medium-textured hair, swap your conditioner for a leave-in spray version – it’s lighter than a standard smoother, says stylist Frank Barbosa. Try Environ Intensive Hair and Scalp Tonic (R307) or John Frieda Full Repair Perfect Ends Deep Infusion (R79,99).

2. Multitask with dry shampoo

Score mega volume with this pro trick: fl ip your head upside down and mist dry shampoo at the roots, then tousle with your fi ngers. The powder particles add weight to hair. Try Lee Stafford Original Dry Shampoo (R94,99).

3. Boost your blow-dry

Build volume as you blow-dry: turn your head upside down, then brush hair, focusing the dryer starting at the roots and moving down the length of a section. The heat will help set the roots so that when you flip your head back up, they’ll stay lifted.

4. Skip the hairspray

Spritzing strands too much weighs them down. ‘Mist only at the roots and crown,’ says hairstylist Rodney Cutler. Or skip the spray and use a root lifter. Try Matrix Total Results Amplify Volume Wonder Boost Root Lifter (R130) or ghd Style Root Lift Spray (R195).

5. Create lift with colour

If you have dark hair and colour it, create the illusion of thicker hair by colouring along the root line only, just to cover regrowth and greys. ‘When hair is one colour, it looks flat. Slightly darker roots make hair look fuller,’ says celebrity colourist Aura Friedman. Try Cover Your Gray Root Touch-up (R29,95, exclusive to Dis-Chem).
