Three steps to better savings

Save big by making these small (yet effective) changes

1. Do you have a security net?

Keep emergency money (ideally, three to six months of living expenses) in a regular savings account as a security net. Annoyed by the too-low interest your bank dole s out? Switch to a bank that respects you.

2. The 30 day rule

Considering making an unnecessary purchase? Always wait 30 days and then ask yourself whether you still want that handbag or leather couch. Chances are that the urge will have passed and you’ll have saved yourself some money.

3. A simple way to save

If you have your paycheck direct-deposited to your checking account, arrange for your bank to automatically transfer a set amount to your savings each month.
