10 foods to help you lose weight

To speed up your metabolism and shed those extra kilos, make sure you include these foods in your diet

1. Apples

An apple a day can keep weight-gain away! Because of their high fibre content apples will make you feel full, preventing you from snacking in between meals. Plus the sweetness will satisfy your cravings for something sweet and sugary.

2. Blueberries

Also high in fibre, berries make for a healthy snack. Although most berries are considered good for you, these dark blue ones are regarded as a ‘superfood’ due to their high vitamin and antioxidant content. Scientists have found that blueberries can reduce Metabolic Syndrome, improve blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol.

3. Eggs

It’s been proven over and over again – eating a protein-rich breakfast not only keeps you fuller for longer, but it also helps regulate your blood sugar levels, preventing you from binge eating when you feel low on energy. The key to losing weight could be as simple as starting your day with eggs – whether you enjoy them boiled, scrambled, baked or in an omelet or frittata.

4. Grapefruit

Grapefruits are low in kilojoules and high in enzymes that burn fat. A study at Vanderbilt University in the US found that when obese adults who were dieting ate half a grapefruit or drank half a cup of grapefruit juice or half a cup of water 20 minutes before each of their three daily meals, they all experienced significant drops in weight.

5.  Spinach

Besides being rich in iron, this versatile green is also full of fiber, vitamin K and protein. Eating more spinach will help you stay full longer, reducing the overall number of calories you consume per day.

6. Lean beef

There’s no need to eliminate meat from your diet if you want to get in shape. A study at Purdue University in the US found that dieters who ate more protein (25% of total kilojoules) felt fuller all day and had fewer food-related thoughts and late-night cravings than those eating less protein (14% of total kilojoules).

7. Chillies

The magic ingredient here is capsaicin, an appetite suppressant. Eating chillies can help you lose weight by speeding up your metabolism and burning fat. So, here’s to more burn and less bulge!

8. Oats

Weight-loss is all about eating fewer calories. Some foods, like oats, can make losing weight easier by making you feel full for longer. Oatmeal will also give you a lasting blast of energy, keeping your blood sugar levels steady and preventing you from snacking.

9. Broccoli

Broccoli is a great source of fibre, iron and calcium. As a result this vegetable keeps you full for longer and helps beat those hunger pangs. It’s also very low in calories, so you can eat plenty of it without worrying about exceeding your daily calorie intake.

10. Water

Drinking water is probably one of the easiest ways to speed-up your weight-loss plan. Experts say that thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. So the next time the cravings hit, drink a glass of water and wait a few minutes. Chances are you won’t be craving that chocolate slab anymore! Also, our bodies need water for all it’s daily functions, including burning fat and flushing toxins.
