How to say no to chocolate

Sticking to your healthy-eating resolutions just got easier. We help you ‘train’ your brain to resist the sweet stuff

To take off kilograms, put on your thinking cap.

 

Volunteers in a Dutch study were shown pictures of chocolate on a computer screen. Those who were given permission to click through the images, speeding up the show, ate more of the real thing later on (30g more) than those who were instructed to sit still (no clicking) while the chocolate pictures came on the screen (17g, for a savings of about 250kJ).

 

 

Call it resistance training:

When you don’t immediately respond to temptation, you’re strengthening your ability to say no in the future, the study authors explain.

To try this: place a chocolate bar right in front of you on your desk and look at it, but don’t touch it: it will help train your mind to resist the sweet stuff in the future.
