A tipple of red wine may help stop your eyesight from deteriorating, says a US study. Researchers found a substance in grapes could protect blood vessels in the eye being damaged by ageing. Resveratrol is a compound that stops the growth of harmful blood vessels in the retina and blindness associated with eye diseases such as macular degeneration.
Other studies have linked it to anti-ageing, heart disease and cancer protection. Resveratrol is found in particularly high levels in grape skin (and therefore red wine), but do remember to stay within the alcohol limit. If you don’t drink red wine, you can get the same benefits from consuming peanuts, raspberries, red grape juice, blueberries and cranberries.
