Three healing foods

Apart from the basic five-a-day message, most of us are unaware of the extraordinary healing powers of everyday foods



Acne, psoriasis, arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome are among the conditions that can be treated through diet, according to nutritionist Dale Pinnock, author of Medicinal Cookery: How You Can Benefit from Nature’s Edible Pharmacy (Constable & Robinson).



Fresh mint relieves stomach cramps

It helps to restore intestinal contractions to a normal rhythm. Blitz a handful of leaves with 4tbsp olive oil and 11tbsp apple cider vinegar to make a salad dressing.


Pineapple helps to control inflammation

It contains a powerful enzyme called bromelain, found in highest concentration in the woody inner core. Blend into a smoothie with fresh ginger and celery.


Pumpkin seeds soothe acne

These powerhouses are rich in zinc, which helps to regulate the hormone system and oil-producing sebaceous glands. Blitz 2 handfuls each pumpkin and sesame seeds, 1 handful hemp seeds, 3tbsp hempseed oil and a pinch of salt in a food processor to make a butter to spread on toast of crackers.
