6 delicious things to make with leftover hot cross buns

Found a couple of stale buns hiding in the bread bin? Don’t feed them to the birds just yet!

We at GH feel the same about leftover hot cross buns (HCBs) as we do about leftover wine – like, why would you have any leftovers, right?! In the unlikely event that you do end up with a few stale buns, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of ways you can turn every last crumb and currant into something even more delicious.

1. BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING

We’re big Jamie Oliver fans – his dishes are simple yet hearty and most of his recipes are 100% crowd-pleasers. So it’s no surprise that we chose his Bun & Butter Pudding recipe as the first of our five scrumptious solutions for leftover HCBs. Get his super-easy recipe here. Or double up the decadence and add chocolate shavings to your HCB pudding!  

 

2. HOT CROSS BUN ICE CREAM

I scream, you scream, we all scream for … hot cross buns! Here’s a super-simple recipe for combining these two delicious treats. 

3. HOT CROSS BUN FRENCH TOAST

The Internet Chef, aka Bridget Davis, has a mouthwatering recipe for Nutella-stuffed HCB French Toast – get the recipe here – but you can add pretty much anything to your HCB French toast, like this combo with caramelised bananas, pecans and Greek yoghurt. 

4. HOT CROSS BUN BACON ‘BUTTIES’

It couldn’t get easier than this – slice your HCB in half, toast and serve with butter and crispy bacon. It’s that simple. Here’s a recipe to prove just how quick and easy this breakfast treat is.

5. HOT CROSS BUN STUFFING FOR ROASTS

Planning a big family Sunday roast? Why not use stale HCBs to make a sweet-savoury stuffing for your chicken or duck? The Internet Chef has a really simple recipe for a tasty HCB stuffing. 

6. HOT CROSS BUN TOASTIES

We’re ending off our roundup with a good old toasted sarmie. Simply sandwich your favourite toastie toppings between two halves of an HCB, toast until hot and enjoy!
