Taste Test: Garlic Bread

No braai is complete without the irresistible aroma and unique crunch of garlic bread. We tested five brands to find out which ones are worth popping on the coals

BREADWINNER

The Woolworths All Garlic Butter Filled Baguette (R26,95) earned the top spot for its golden, crispy crust and intense garlic flavour. The butter was perfectly and evenly spread on each slice.

CROWD-PLEASER

If you prefer your bread to have just a hint of garlic, you’ll enjoy Pick n Pay’s Garlic Loaf (R12,90). Our tasters were pleased with its mouthwatering aroma and good flavour.

NICE PRICE

SuperSpar Garlic Bread (R11,99) wowed our tasters with its appealing golden colour as well as its perfect and even distribution of garlic. With its great price, it’s a real bargain too!

Also tested

Papa’s Food

Our tasters said that Papa’s Food’s garlic bread had too much butter, with very little garlic flavour and herbs. The slices were uneven and the bread had a pale appearance.

Price: R17,99, Checkers

Freshline Garlic Bread

The herbs dominated the flavour and aroma of this garlic bread. Tasters said there was too little garlic and butter, and the bread had a dry texture.
