The GH Cocktail Challenge

It’s all about creating customised cocktails this summer

 

 

Bartender extraordinaire Dominic Walsh has twice represented SA in international competitions – first as the national winner of the Angostura Aromatic Bitters Global Cocktail Challenge in Trinidad and Tobago, then as a finalist at the Tahona Society in Mexico. Here Dom makes a cocktail especially for GH, with the sublime Hendrick’s Gin.

The GH Summer Sundowner

 

Ingredients

50ml Hendrick’s Gin

37,5ml fresh grapefruit juice

25ml Earl Grey syrup (very easy to make – see below)

2 sprigs of thyme

splash tonic water

 

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in a glass, excluding the tonic water. (I used a metal mug, but a normal glass will do just fine.)
  2. Top with crushed ice.
  3. Stir vigorously.
  4. Splash with tonic water.
  5. Garnish with thyme sprigs and grapefruit zest.

 

Earl Grey Syrup

 

Ingredients

150ml boiling water

150ml white sugar

3 Earl Grey tea bags

 

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in a coffee mug and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Remove the tea bags.
