Children Read to Cats in Shelters

A reading scheme with a (heart-melting) difference

The Book Buddies programme at the Animal Rescue League of Berk County in Pennsylvania in the US has endeared itself to Internet users. Children from Grades 1 to 8 are encouraged to read to cats in the shelter’s adoption room, not only to improve their reading skills but also to soothe and comfort the kitties.

This is the thank you note mom Katie Procyk wrote to the shelter: ‘I want to thank you for giving my son the opportunity to participate in a programme such as this one. I believe it truly helps him not only to read but also to help the animals who do not have warm, loving homes, and that we must help speak up for the critters who do not have a voice’
