The Spier Secret Courtyard and Secret Dinners

Come enjoy food, wine and creativity in a hidden nook.

If you love being in the know with pop-up events this is right up your alley. Organisers of the popular Spier Secret Festival have temporarily transformed an empty courtyard in the heart of Cape Town into a spot where people can relax, drink wine and embrace the creative energy of the World Design Capital 2014.

On Wale Street, look out for the geometric-patterned windows, with ‘Secret Courtyard’ written in the middle. Head inside and you’ll likely see other curious patrons catching up over a glass of wine. Carry on walking to the courtyard itself; we loved the rugged brick walls contrasted against the gorgeous storied floor tiles, and the Thingking stools.

If you go further still, you’ll find the cosy bar, with the most beautiful, intricately carved cabinet behind it. Here, choose between Chenin Blanc slush puppies, Spier wines (at cellar-door prices), Devil’s Peak craft beers or home-made ginger beer.

If you’re feeling peckish, there’s a nifty list of snacks, all ranging between R35 and R45, dreamed up by nearby Dear Me brasserie’s Vanessa Marx. Munch on biltong (from beef raised on Farmer Angus’s pastures at Spier), a scotch egg with home-made aioli, or moreish chilli and buchu salted candy peanuts.
