How to Keep your Goldfish Happy

A barren tank or bowl will make your goldfish miserable. Here’s how to keep Goldy’s spirits up

1. Provide mental stimulation by creating a habitat that is interesting and diverse,’ says animal behaviourist Louise Thompson, who is also a consultant at Paws Abilities Behaviour & Learning Centre in Benoni. ‘Goldfish tend to eat live plants, so rather use plastic ones. They use them to hide, and to congregate in groups. Caves or other hiding places are also needed. Use washed, coloured stones or purchase plastic moulds.’

2. Goldfish respond to colour, says Thompson, so introduce a wide variety of colours in the tank. ‘Add background paper and an assortment of coloured objects. Light is also something to consider. And at the very least, get your goldfish a friend.’
