Long-weekend planner

Use public holidays wisely by planning ahead

When: Human Rights Day, 21 March

Where to go:

Arniston and Swellendam

For an authentic getaway, visit the unspoilt fishing village of Arniston (also known as Waenhuiskrans). It’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town. You can lie on the beach, take long walks and visit Napier, Bredasdorp, Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas. The Arniston Seaside Cottages have thatched roofs, reed ceilings, tiled floors and fireplaces. Pets are welcome on request. Split your break by spending a couple of nights in Swellendam, the third-oldest town in South Africa, and about 100km from Arniston. Five kilometres from Swellendam, in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains beneath the Eenuurkop Peak, is the 110ha Eenuurkop farm. It’s rustic and comfortable, and has self-contained cottages.

Cost and how to book:

Arniston Seaside Cottages, R1 120 per two-bedroomed cottage per night.

☎ 028 445 9772 or visit www.wheretostay.co.za/arniston  or www.arniston-etnas.co.za.

Eenuurkop, R900 per night for a family cottage that sleeps eight.

☎ 028 514 1447 or visit www.eenuurkop.co.za.

Magaliesburg

For arts and crafts, country restaurants, valleys, rivers, indigenous woodland, and horse and mountainbike trails, head to Magaliesburg in the North West Province – an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. Nestled in the Magaliesberg mountain range and not far from Sun City and Pilanesberg is Utopia Private Nature Estate, a nature reserve that offers self-catering accommodation in A-framed chalets that sleep up to six people each. The reserve has no electricity, but gas is available to run the geyser, lights and kitchen appliances. There are shared tennis courts and swimming pools, and a children’s playground.

Cost and how to book:

Utopia Private Nature Estate is about R1 000 per chalet per night.

☎ 083 441 0735 or visit www.utopiaprivatenatureestate.yolasite.com.
