Musical fans prepare to scream, because it has been confirmed that a Mamma Mia! sequel is being filmed… with the original cast. Nearly a decade after the film’s original release in 2008, the BBC reports that the cast are set to reprise their roles in the ABBA-inspired musical.
Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth are all reportedly taking part, while ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will be executive producers. According to Deadline, the film will be released mid 2018, complete with a soundtrack of ABBA songs that weren’t featured in the first film.
The original 2008 film was a box office hit, grossing around $615 million worldwide. Set on the Greek island of Kalokairi, Mamma Mia! follows the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who invites three men to her wedding, who are all possible fathers she’s never met.
And she did all of this without telling her mother Donna (Meryl Streep). Cue the arrival of Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård) and Harry Bright (Colin Firth), plus the addition of Donna’s hilarious pals Rosie and Tanya (Christine Baranski and Julie Walters respectively), the movie is certainly a feel-good film.
