Dinky’s Den


Situated in Arniston, a scenic 2.5-hour meander from Cape Town, Dinky’s Den has a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. This working wine-and-dairy farm in pastoral Bonnievale (about 21Ž2 hours from Cape Town) has two simple yet charming self-catering cottages set on expansive lawns. Rent one or spread out and take both – the affordable price tag allows the indulgence – and spend your weekend fishing and frolicking in the Breede River in total privacy. Look out for the beautiful peacocks.

Storms River Mouth Rest Camp


Bring your caravan or tent and camp at one of the most remarkable camp sites in the country, right on the seafront in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park (two hours from Port Elizabeth). There is plenty to do, including hikes, snorkelling, scuba diving and boat cruises.

Rockery Nook


Situated on the Eastern Knysna head, this pretty property has a rambling six-bedroomed main house and a further three self-catering units. The best part is the position – perched above the protected waters of the lagoon, at low tide you can wade in crystal-clear shallow waters, while when it’s higher, boating and swimming off the steps add a sense of adventure.
