Every year new trends emerge on the wedding scene and this year we’re super-excited to see what’s next. These trends have been building up over the past few years and 2018 is the year they are enjoying the spotlight. Here are 10 fabulous wedding trends for 2018:

1. Ultra Violet
The Pantone Colour of the Year has been revealed and it’s Ultra Violet! With last year’s colour being Greenery, there was a massive wave of weddings with green as their colour scheme. Expect to see shades of purple at some (if not many) of the weddings you go to this year, from the invites to the table décor.
And if you’re planning your own wedding, why not take a trip down the ultra-violet lane and see whether you too want to include this colour trend in your big day? TIP: For a little added luxe, add touches of gold to your ultra-violet look.
2. Dessert table
Instead of opting for the traditional third course, couples are now going a more fun and quirky route with a dessert table. This way you can incorporate a lot more sweet treats, just in mini versions – how wonderful! Everyone gets a taste of something and it allows you to be creative.
3. Hanging florals
This year will see a more creative approach to flowers at many weddings in the form of hanging floral installations. Create a dynamic space with a touch of greenery or floral designs hanging above the tables, and have fun with the height and viewpoints. This also gives you more space to play with on your tables when it comes to things like candles and interesting décor.
4. Copper
Move over rose gold, copper is big news! Make your wedding current and on trend with this metallic favourite in everything from cutlery and chairs to small décor details such as ribbons. Copper is especially effective when reflecting light, so incorporate lots of fairy lights and candles. And the best thing about this trend, other than the fact that it looks amazing, is that it’s totally affordable!
5. Transparent elements
This year is seeing more and more transparent elements being featured in the big day, from location to décor. Wedding planner and blogger Charley at London Bride US says 2018 is the year for transparency. ‘Everything from light bright spaces with full windows to tablescapes featuring an abundance of glass details. Great for modern and minimalist couples who like clean lines.’
6. Exciting food
The traditional three-course format may be taking a back seat to newer ways of serving food in 2018. More and more couples are opting for options like food trucks, portable pizza ovens and even family-style sharing plates. A lot more alternative food themes are also appearing in weddings, such as Mexican-, Japanese- and Peruvian-inspired cuisine – with tacos, sushi and ceviche on the menu.
7. Wedding capes
More brides are changing tradition by foregoing the veil and opting for a wedding cape. Très chic! The trend really began a few years ago, when Solange Knowles wore one at her wedding, and now 2018 is the year it’s going full steam ahead!
8. Single-stem bouquets
Fitting in with a more minimalistic look, the single-stem bouquet is simple and elegant, not to mention more affordable! A classic flower may be all you need for your wedding bouquet. For a local spin, go for an impressive king protea or even a colourful strelitzia.
9. Alternative guest books
Instead of having guests write a message in a guest book for the happy couple, we are now seeing more alternative ways for creating a lasting memory. For the sentimental at heart, it’s a great idea to have your guests write messages on a piece of furniture (such as a coffee table) and then having it varnished after the event.
A fun option for the children at heart is getting guests to write on Jenga blocks. In this way, each time you play the game you’ll be reminded of your special day.
And for the more vintage soul, set up a Polaroid camera next to your guest book and have people take their photo (selfie time!) and place it next to their message. This way you can remember how everyone looked on the big day when you are looking at it in years to come.
10. 3D invitations
Three-dimensional invites are so much fun. If you want to ditch the usual invite format then this is the way to do it. Nothing is set in stone, so you can let your creativity take flight here. This goes for every aspect of your wedding. It is your day, after all.
