13 Compliments Men Secretly Want to Hear

Some of them will make you smile and some will make you roll your eyes…

By Madge Booth

In a recent thread on Ask Reddit, the men of the forum were asked to divulge the type of compliments they most love receiving — and while some of the answers seemed very obvious (cue eye-roll) , some were actually quite surprising. The general consensus was that any compliment is a good compliment as long as it’s genuine, but when asked to get specific, the answers were completely across the board.

Here are just a few of the things men secretly love to get complimented on…

1. His clothes
Sometimes, men put just as much effort into their looks as women do — and they love it when you take notice.

2. His body
Multiple people in the Reddit thread said that they absolutely love when someone compliments them on their body, especially if they’ve been working out.

3. How safe he makes you feel
This was one of the more surprising ones, but quite a few Ask Reddit users seemed to agree that knowing they offered a sense of security was very comforting to hear.

4. His smell
Apparently, men like to be complimented on the way they smell. In their eyes, it’s the perfect blend of pheromones, aftershave, deodorant, and soap.

5. Whatever makes him interesting
Like all humans, men like to know that they have something about them that makes them extra compelling.

6. His penis
Zero surprises here.

7. His hair (or lack thereof)
Men feel just as simultaneously confident and self-conscious about a new haircut as women do, and a lot of Ask Reddit users seemed to agree that a hair compliment was the way to a their heart. If he doesn’t have any hair at all, reassuring him that it’s totally OK is also a big plus.

8. His brain
Apparently, men like to know you’re attracted to their brain as well as their appearance.

9. How strong he is
While perhaps a little caveman-esque, being perceived as ‘surprisingly strong’ was dubbed one of the most flattering backhanded compliments a man can get.

10. His driving skills
We all respect someone who can effortlessly parallel park and, for men, it’s a massive ego boost to be complimented on it.

11. How trustworthy or dependable he is
Knowing you can count on him — especially if he’s worked hard to gain your trust — can mean a lot to your partner.

12. His sense of humour
Let it be known that you don’t owe it to any man to laugh at a joke he tells that isn’t funny — but if you actually find him clever or witty, he’d love to hear it.

13. His face
Whether it’s pretty eyes or a great smile, compliments about specific features apparently make a man feel handsome.
