4 surprising immune-system-boosting foods

Are you always getting sick? Add these foods to your winter meal plan and give your immune system an extra boost

By Good Housekeeping

We may be in the midst of the cold and flu season, and even if you’ve already been sick, you can still keep your immune system strong to prevent getting sick again. ‘Giving your body the right vitamins and minerals by eating a nutrient-rich diet goes a long way in [strengthening] your body against colds and flus, and even fighting infection,’ says Naazneen Khan, nutrition, health and wellness manager at Nestlé South Africa. To fend off those winter bugs, round off your plate with these immunity-boosting ingredients.

Cauliflower

It helps keep your cells in working order, including the cells that fight off infections and help keep your immune system strong. A stronger immune system means that your body will be better equipped to fight off colds and flus.

Carrots and sweet potatoes

Carrots and sweet potatoes help support your body’s skin and mucous membrane, which is your first line of defence against viruses.

Chicken

When boiled, chicken protein helps thin mucus and clears it from the body.

Feeling under the weather?

‘Soups are a great way to keep you hydrated and the heat from the soup helps to thin mucus. This aids with clearing nasal passageways,’ advises Khan.
