Every year more than 45-billion pads and tampons are used worldwide. They then end up in our landfills and contain chemicals that can impact the environment for hundreds of years. We all need to be reusing items as much as we can in order to help our planet and, when it comes to our sanitary products, there are greener alternatives. Here are four popular options.

1. Reusable pads
This is an updated version of what our grandmothers used to use back in the days before disposable products became the norm. These will keep you, and the planet, protected. They come in different lengths and a variety of absorbency levels to cater for all flows. All you have to do is wash them afterwards!

2. Period panties
The absorbency and aftercare for period panties is the same as a reusable pad, except that the ‘pad’ makes up part of the underwear. While these can take some getting used to, they are surprisingly effective, and much more comfortable for those who prefer not to put anything inside their bodies.

3. Menstrual cups
Menstrual cups are becoming increasingly popular the world over. They come in a variety of designs and sizes, and can last for up to 10 years. They are made of silicone, which bends comfortably to fit in the body, plus they contain no harmful chemicals and can be left in all day.

4. Menstrual sponges
These are less popular than the other three methods, as they do look quite intimidating. But devotees swear that they are incredibly comfortable because the sponge compresses to fit the shape of the body perfectly. And because they are sponges – natural ones at that – they are really absorbent and easy to clean.
