Comfort food tends to be kilojoule- laden, which isn’t so great when you’re trying to shed a few kilos. And let’s be honest, nothings says ‘comfort’ like a bowl of steaming soup….
According to Fiona Kirk, author of Soup Can Make You Thin (Painless Publishing), soups made with whole-wheat pasta, brown rice and pulses plus a source of protein such as lean meat and fish will make you feel fuller for longer, which will help curb the cravings for snacking later on.
Here are Kirk’s top tips for a filling soup:
- Go for protein-based soups that contain meat, chicken, beans or lentils.
- Top up vegetable soup with protein or have it on the side.
- Avoid soups described as ‘hearty’ or ‘big’ on the packaging, as they are likely to be high in kilojoules.
- Choose soups that contain less than 0,6g salt per 100ml.
