5 adventurous things to do with your kids in and around Cape Town

It’s summer time, which means there are plenty of exciting things to do in the Mother City. We’ve rounded up our top five child-friendly adventurous things to do in Cape Town.

1. Snorkel with seals

Just around the corner from the Cape Town CBD you can go snorkelling with seals in Hout Bay. The snorkel season runs from September to April each year. All children under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult. The trip is weather-dependent. 

Price: R750 per person (minimum age 10 years). Price includes all gear and a hot drink and biscuits after the snorkelling session.

2. Explore underground tunnels

Climb down a cast-iron manhole in  Vredehoek to begin your tour of Cape Town’s underground tunnels with Figure of 8 Tours. The course takes up to three hours to complete. 

Price: R270 per person. Price includes a permit, soft drinks and other refreshments.

3. Kayak with penguins

Sign up for a two-hour kayaking trip with Kayak Cape Town to see the Boulders Beach penguins. All children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.

4. Book a bicycle with the West Coast Explorers Club

Book a bicycle and follow the map along the Yzerfontein coastline, which will guide you to strategic hot spots around Yzerfontein where you can stop and enjoy the scenery and attractions. 

Price: Bicycle hire is R180 a day. Activities at hot spots are not included.

5. Go stand-up paddleboarding

Hire a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) at one of SUP Cape Town’s many locations: Clifton 4th, Waterfront/CTICC Canal Quays or Intaka Island Canal Walk. No experience is needed – you’ll be given a lesson on land.

Price: Prices vary according to location.

Waterfront/CTICC Canal Quays: R150 for 30 minutes; R220 for 1 hour.

Intaka Island Canal Walk: R180 for 1 hour.

Clifton 4th (1 December to end of February): R100 for 30 minutes; R150 for 1 hour.
