5 bathroom-makeover do’s and don’ts

Planning on renovating your bathroom? Reading this first could save you time, hassle and rands

By Good Housekeeping

Debra Retief, marketing manager at Tile Africa, has these tips for bathroom renovations:

  1. Plan ahead and use professionals

Tile Africa’s design advisers can give you tips and advice when it comes to the layout and renovation of your bathroom. You’ll also find some good ideas at Tile Africa’s ‘Inspiration Gallery’ – go to www.tileafrica.co.za. Using professionals should also prevent you from making costly mistakes and impulse buys, says Retief.

  1. Choose your storage wisely

Storage can be incorporated in clever, practical and attractive ways, such as large vanities, elegant cabinets and tallboy cupboards. Make provision for these in your plans.

  1. Protect your house

Cover your furniture, close off other rooms and designate a set entrance and path for construction workers to use during the renovations. Try to be patient – remind yourself that you are investing in your wellbeing and your home.

  1. Be budget-wise

Add a 10% buffer to your budget, as there are inevitably costs that haven’t been planned for.

  1. Keep things neutral

Keep in mind that you will probably want to sell your house one day, so try to keep things fairly neutral and use materials that won’t date quickly. You can always add your personal touch with removable mirrors, vases, towels, mats and candles.
