5 Shaving Mistakes You’re Probably Making

Say goodbye to bumps, cuts and razor burn

By Good Housekeeping

1. You shave straight away

We understand that you want to get your morning routine underway, but experts say it’s better to wait 2 to 3 minutes after getting into the shower or bath – this allows time for the follicles to open up and for the hair to soften, making it easier to shave.

2. You shave dry

No matter how rushed you are, don’t be tempted to shave without using anything to lather up your skin. Shaving cream or gel (or hair conditioner, if you’re in a pinch) helps create a smooth surface so the razor can easily glide over your skin, minimising the risk for nicks and cuts.

3. You over-shave

Repeated shaving of the same area is a major cause of razor burn and skin irritation. No surprise there. But what is surprising, is that women tend to over-shave their armpits – two strokes should be enough, not five or even 10!

4. You don’t replace your blade often enough

Old blades are not only less effective, but also more likely to cause red bumps and trap bacteria, which could lead to infections. How often you change your razor or razor blades will depend on how often you shave, but keep an eye out for any signs of dullness (usually after five to 10 shaves).

5. You shave in different directions

Shaving your legs up and down in no specific pattern could lead to razor burn, skin irritation and ingrown hairs. Start by shaving down (in the direction your hair grows) and if you have a sensitive skin, don’t shave upward at all. Otherwise, shave upward for a closer shave – it’s much safer now seeing as the hairs are shorter and the skin is warmer and more lubricated.
