As we move further into 2020, New Year’s resolutions are often likely to fall away, often including our fitness goals of becoming stronger and healthier.

Here are six steps to help you set attainable goals and take small steps to become your best self this year, courtesy of Ceri Hannan, Virgin Active South Africa’s national product development manager.

1. Track your steps

Record your daily steps with a wearable fitness device or your smartphone. (There are a few app options–  just make sure you take it everywhere.) The elevator or escalator may save you time and effort, but taking the stairs will up your heart rate, increase your steps and help you with your fitness goals.

2. Drink more water

Your body is made up of 60% water, which helps maintain digestion and body temperature, and absorb nutrients. Skip sugary and carbonated drinks and keep a refillable water bottle on your desk or in your bag to keep sipping throughout the day.

3. Mix it up

Join an exercise class (or two!) with a friend to keep motivated and dedicated. Whether you prefer stretching it out in a yoga or Pilates class or hopping on a bike in a spinning class, gyms like Virgin Active offer a great variety of classes to enjoy.

4. Strengthen your core

Make it a habit to flex your stomach muscles before you get out of bed in the morning. Lie on your back and pull your stomach towards your spine, lift your pelvis gently, then lower it again. Repeat 15 times each day for a strong core, which will help you in your fitness journey.

5. Breathe in deeply

Do this simple exercise twice a day to improve blood flow, digestion, posture and more. Take air in through your nose for two seconds and fill your stomach, then breathe out slowly through your lips.

6. Track your progress

There are a host of useful apps that can help you track your activity and goals and keep you motivated. Look for options like Runtastic, Jefit, Fitbit Coach, MyFitnessPal, Strava and Nike Training Club.
