8 clever ways to use hairspray at home

Sure it keeps your hair frizz-free, but you won’t believe all the problems hairspray can solve

By Good Housekeeping

We’ve all got a can of hairspray lying around – even if you’re too lazy to spritz your hairdo every day. But having these handy household tricks in your back pocket will ensure that it never goes to waste.

 1. Thread a needle.

Try this trick when you’re running late and (of course) the middle button just popped off your blouse. Spray the tip of the thread and then give it a pinch, suggests Good Housekeeping’s home-care expert Heloise. The pesky thread will stiffen – so you can get it through the skinny eye of a needle in just one try.

2. Preserve dried roses.

There’s nothing more fleeting than the beauty of a bloom, but a little spray can help you outwit mother nature (sort of). ‘After the flowers have dried, a spritz will help to keep the colour from fading – and make them easier to dust,’ says Heloise.

3. Tame your brows.

You might be chiefly concerned with the hair on your head, but don’t forget the bit that grows above your eyes. ‘Use a small amount on a finger to smooth unruly brows into place,’ says Heloise. Just take care to avoid getting any in your eyes.

4. Protect kids’ art.

Not every scrawl or scribble will be a masterpiece, but some of those drawings will certainly deserve a little preservation. Heloise says a light misting of hairspray on pencil art will prevent smudging.

5. Stop a pantyhose run from getting worse.

If you spot a hole in the toe (the warning sign of a major run to come), stop it in its tracks with a quick spritz of hairspray. ‘It does make the fabric sticky, so don’t go overboard,’ says Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lab and Textiles Lab at the US Good Housekeeping Institute. ‘But a little bit can keep the problem from getting worse.’

6. Seal chalk art.

Just like hairspray can keep your kid’s art looking great, it can also make your latest Pinterest project last longer. Blogger Kristin of The Hunted Interior thought her pretty chalk-labeled bins would quickly fade, but hairspray helped set her lovely hand-lettering.

7. Stop flower pollen from getting all over the place.

‘I’ve found that a little spritz of hairspray on the stamens of fresh flowers, like lilies and tulips, keeps the pollen grains from falling off and staining carpeting or fabrics,’ says Forte. ‘These stains are very difficult to remove.’ Isn’t that the truth – especially since water just makes the stain worse.

8. Eliminate clothing static, in a pinch.

Hairspray can help tame a skirt you just can’t get to sit correctly. ‘Don’t use too much,’ says Forte. ‘Just spritz a little on your hands, and rub your skirt or tights to reduce static without damaging the fabric.’
