8 things you may think are low-carb, but really aren’t

The first thing that tends to comes to mind when we think of carbs, is bread. However, there are many other unexpected foods that are packed with just as many grams of carbs as bread, if not more. Watch out for these ones:

1. Juice

Most juices are very high in fast-digesting carbs. A cup of orange juice can have around 30 grams of carbohydrates

2. Raisins

A tiny, unassuming box of these guys has 34 grams of carbs.

3. Sugar-free candy

Although they contain no sugar, sugar-free candies do contain carbs since many companies use a filler called maltodextrin, which is a complex-carb produced from starch.

4. Quinoa

It’s a better alternative to bread, thanks to its high protein and fibre count, but quinoa still has around 39 grams of carbohydrates in a cup.

5. Cocktails

A gin and tonic or rum and coke can run you anywhere from 16 – 39 carbs per drink.

6. Yoghurt

If you opt for a high-sugar, fruity variety, you risk taking in more than 40 carbs per 227 grams per serving.

7. Tomato sauce

One cup could contain more than 20 grams of carbs. 

8. Gluten-free foods

People often confuse gluten-free with carb-free, but that’s not the case. Gluten-free pastas, breads and cereals can contain just as many carbohydrates as those with gluten.
