Beauty hacks from your kitchen

We are constantly being bombarded with advertisements suggesting that we need the latest in beauty and skincare products to look and feel our best. But before the discovery of age-busting chemicals and the creation of high-end products, people were using simpler ingredients to keep their skin in tiptop condition, and some of these can be found in our kitchens.

Here are some of the most effective household items to incorporate into your beauty regime:

Coconut oil

While still fairly new on the South African market, coconut oil has fast become something of a wonder product. Not only is it healthy to cook with, it can also be used to moisturise skin and hair, treat sunburn, ensure a smooth shave and remove makeup.

Tea bags

Dark circles under our eyes are something most of have to deal with at some or other time in our lives because, well, life can be exhausting! Cold tea bags have long been touted as a great way to get rid of puffiness in the eye area. Not only do they soothe the eyes but you also need to use less concealer.

Vinegar

Sure, it may not have a great scent and is best served with fish and chips, but vinegar is also great for curing dandruff as well as removing product build-up. Use it as a rinse before shampooing and conditioning your hair each time you shower for extra-clean, shiny tresses.

Turmeric

This spice is finally getting the attention it deserves as a multipurpose product. It’s known to help fight acne, brighten the complexion and improve skin elasticity. Incorporate this into your beauty routine by adding some turmeric powder to your face masks and get ready for clear, youthful-looking skin.

Bicarbonate of soda

Bicarbonate of soda is great for treating breakouts. It’s a great drying agent and, when made into a paste with water and applied to blemishes, can reduce inflammation and discomfort.
