Well, the youths are at it again, having dreamed up yet another social media challenge, the #ShellOnChallenge. Like the ones that have come before it, this new one’s super stupid, super dangerous, and has doctors crying PLEASE, STOP, NO. So, let’s just jump right into the who, what, when, where, and why.

The 5W’s of the #ShellOnChallenge

Who: Teens looking to impress friends, loved ones, and strangers on the internet who they’ve never met.

What: These hooligans are eating foods with their packaging still on. Sometimes said foods are fruits, so teens are biting straight into banana peels and watermelon rinds. Sometimes the foods are packaged ones like Hostess cupcakes or carrots in a Ziploc baggy. That means the kids are eating, and attempting to digest, plastic. PLASTIC.

When: It seems this challenge began recently, in the past week or few days.

Where: People are posting their challenges on their social media accounts, like Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat.

Why: GOOD QUESTION.

Here are some examples:

Doctors are strictly warning teens to not participate in this challenge. Fruit rinds typically aren’t dangerous, The Post reported. But according to the same source: “Eating plastic, on the other hand, can be dangerous. BPA has been suggested to influence hormones. Chemicals in PVC like vinyl chloride have been linked to cancers.”

So there you have it. Just unwrap your food. It takes two seconds! And you’ll live a healthier life!
