Every drop counts

With the water levels in Western Cape dams decreasing every day, the province has now implemented Level 6B water restrictions. So what does this mean for the people living in the province? The limit has now been further reduced from 87 litres per person per day to 50 litres per person per day in a single household. These are trying times for our environment, but the University of Cape Town has a plan to get everyone involved in making a change.

In 2017, the University of Cape Town developed a free app called DROP DROP. Created by UCT’s Information for Community Services (iCOMMS) interdisciplinary team, the app is a great tool for those who want to play their part in saving water in any way they can. While this type of app  is very relevant to the water crisis in the Western Cape, it is not limited to that area alone. It can help benefit the entire country to preserve the precious resource.

How does it work?

DROP DROP uses the readings from the municipality’s external water meter that is connected to your home to estimate your household usage and monthly bill.

With these readings, users can improve their water usage by following some of the suggestions presented by the app. Some of the suggestions include ‘How to Change a Washer on a Leaky Tap’, ‘Test for Water Leaks’ and ‘How to Save Money with Every Flush’.

There is also a reportback section where users can log reports about the water-delivery services in and around their area. This is accompanied by a full contact list of the relevant departments or services people can call to escalate urgent matters.

Download the app today to further reduce your water usage with useful tips from the brainiacs at UCT. DROP DROP is available for free download on Android and iOS
