Even though some of us are still trying to figure out what the existing symbols mean, Unicode, an organisation that standardises character encoding, including emojis, is considering which colourful icons should be added to the June 2016 and 2017 releases. And pretty much everyone will be able to cross something off their emoji wish list.

The 79 contenders cover every conceivable texting need. Pancakes, avocado, croissant and bacon might be joining the food menu. Animal lovers can potentially look forward to fox, deer, gorilla, rhino, butterfly and duck icons. And potstickers, gyoza, pierogi and empanadas all get some love with a cross-cultural dumpling.

Trendy additions like selfie and face palm might also it into the crowd, as well as more standard gestures like fingers crossed and a handshake.
Check out some of the mock-ups below, with the rest on the Unicode website, and get excited for a growing visual library. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
