Head lice are every parent’s worst nightmare, as they spread very easily and are difficult to get rid of. In South Africa, the lice season starts in September and can run right up until midwinter. Symptoms of head lice include itching around the ears and at the nape of the neck. To ensure you get rid of lice completely and prevent reinfestation, make sure you choose a good product and follow this advice:
- Use a fine-tooth comb and a magnifying glass and comb through the hair onto a tissue. Using a magnifying glass is more effective than a simple visual examination.
- To avoid reinfestation, treat all household members simultaneously and repeat after seven days, wash items that come in close contact with the head, such as bed linen and towels, and dry on a high heat in a tumble dryer.
- Sanitise hairbrushes, combs and hair ties at least once a week and check coat collars, hoods, hats and scarves for lice and nits.
