Home-grown herbs not only taste better, they also cost less than the ones you buy in stores

By Good Housekeeping

Growing herbs at home is a simple and inexpensive undertaking. Plus, having your own supply of fresh herbs does wonders for your cooking.

Today we’re focusing on mint. Click here to see our tips on planting basil and origanum

Mint

This is an uplifting, cooling and refreshing herb. From garden mint to spearmint, peppermint, and chocolate, apple and pineapple mint, there’s a variety to suit all your culinary moods.

How to Grow it in Pots:

  • Mint can cope with light shade but likes a few hours of sun daily.
  • Plant seedlings or runners in potting soil with a layer of compost.
  • Mint spreads rapidly, so make sure the plants are spaced about 20cm apart.
  • Pinch off any flowering buds.
  • Mint likes damp conditions, so keep the soil moist but not wet.
