If you consider yourself to be a beauty and skincare junkie, you have no doubt heard of the jade roller. This device, with its roots in ancient China, is rolled over the face to help products to be absorbed, to cool the skin and to help improve circulation. The latest gadget popping up all over the Internet is the gua sha board, which boasts similar results and is just as fun to use.

A gua sha board is a flat stone usually made from quartz, with a very specific shape that is designed to complement the shape of the face. One end tapers off into a thinner point, while the other one is wider, with one or more curves going inwards. While the original version of this practice is also known as ‘scraping’ and can leave skin red and bruised, this is not how it should be used on the face.
To use one, moderate pressure should be applied to the face to boost circulation and harder pressure is applied to drain the lymphatic system. This is not only a great way to practise self-care but can also help to reduce puffiness and redness. And just in case you thought that using one seems complicated, it’s not! After applying some of your favourite facial oil, simply drag the tool in outward motions using the flat end of the gua sha board, using both short and longer strokes.
