Applying foundation is one thing. Applying it in such a way that it looks natural is quite another. Many people struggle to achieve the perfect finish the way makeup artists do. That’s why we’ve put together some tips from the pros to help you look like the most flawless version of you. You’re welcome!

1. Know your perfect shade

The first mistake people often make when using foundation is using the wrong shade. This is also a dead giveaway to the rest of the world that you are a makeup rookie. Testing a colour on your jawline in the daylight is the best way to find your perfect match. And don’t forget that many of us are slightly darker in the summer months, so you might need to invest in different shades for colder and warmer months.

2. Know your ideal formula

In order for foundation to look as natural as possible, it needs to look as though it’s your skin. This won’t be the case if you pick a formula that doesn’t suit your skin type, as the application won’t be as smooth. While dry skin looks better when coated with a liquid or cream formula, oily skin is complemented by formulas with a matt finish. Got normal skin? You’re lucky enough to be able to pick whichever formula you prefer.

3. Be clever with coverage

Before you whip out the products and tools, it’s important to take a seat in front of the mirror and actually inspect your face. Which areas of your face are more red or discoloured? Those are the zones that will need fuller coverage. Areas where your skin tone is more even will require much less product. Putting on heavy, full-coverage makeup is not going to have a natural finish, and there is such a thing as ‘too much of a good thing’.

4. Keep your canvas smooth

Streaky foundation is never a good look, and whatever your results after applying your makeup could be because of your skin. Not only is regular exfoliating important, so is using a good primer before you start your application. Choose one that offers hydration as well as minimises the appearance of pores, and buff your makeup in with a small brush around problem areas such as the creases next to your nose to make sure it’s well blended.

5. Make your new ‘skin’ look natural

Just as you should examine your face before application, so should you sit back and take a look after you have finished. This will help you to see if there are any streaky or unblended areas that need some extra work. Another pro tip if your makeup looks a bit cakey is to gently press your warm fingers onto the area to help the foundation to melt into the skin for a more realistic finish. This will bring your new skin to life.
