How to add volume to your lashes

Define your eyelashes by making them look ‘thicker’. We offer our advice on eyelash extensions and review three mascaras.

By Good Housekeeping

Ditch the mascara and amp up your lashes with eyelash extensions.

Eyelash extensions are made from silk, mink or synthetic material and are bonded to your own lashes by a salon technician, who will choose a colour and length that suits you best. The initial sitting takes about two hours and you will need to check in for a maintenance fix every two weeks to keep them looking full and neat. The lashes last for two to three weeks and cost R650. Fill-ins take an hour and cost R250. It takes 20 minutes to have lashes removed and it costs R100. For more info visit www.petticoatparlour.co.za.

If you’re not ready to try eyelash extensions, we tested 3 mascaras you can opt for instead:

Bourjois Volume Fast & Perfect (R149,95)

‘The auto-rotating brush means the mascara is easy to apply – great if you’re in a rush.’

Rimmel Extra Wow Lash Mascara (R69,95)

‘It went on evenly, separating the lashes without forming clumps. The wand creates soft but full-looking lashes.’

Revlon CustomEyes Mascara (R135)

‘It has two settings to create two effects – longer and dramatic, and longer and defined lashes. Although this mascara could be a little darker, it’s easy to use and it’s inexpensive.’
