Coat shopping and winter go together like rainy days and warm cups of tea. But with some clever shopping you can buy one coat that will last for numerous winters to come, leaving much more time for tea drinking, lie-ins and other cold-weather activities.
The right coat should meet the following criteria:
1. It has to be comfortable, yet smart enough to wear to more formal occasions. A trench coat is always a great choice, as it dresses up any outfit and always looks appropriate.
2. It must leave room for layering. Never buy a coat that fits snugly around the arms and shoulders, as this will limit your movement once you’ve got a jersey on as well.
3. Always look for quality. It’s worth spending a bit more on a coat that is made out of a natural fibre such as wool. Polyester and other synthetic fibres will not only leave you cold but will also retain sweat.
4. Pockets are not negotiable. A good coat should always have lined pockets to keep your hands warm.
5. Fit is not negotiable either. Be sure to get a good fit from the shoulders – the coat should hang straight down. Pay attention to the details: does the coat cover your wrists? Does the coat pull anywhere once you close it? Are all of the seams and pleat closures sitting flat?
6. Always choose a timeless style over a trendier version. A beautifully tailored piece will never go out of style, especially if you opt for black, grey or camel. You can always add a lighter tone closer to your face with the addition of a scarf or polo neck.
7. Comfort is key. Remember to sit down in the coat that you are trying on, and walk around the changing room or shop a bit to make sure that the weight of the coat works for you.
