How to organise your makeup according to Marie Kondo

These tips spark joy!

By Helen Wallace

Kondo

Marie Kondo fever has swept SA, with more and more people wanting to pursue a more clutter-free life. Life is hectic, which means that we don’t always have time to keep our lives – never mind our houses – in order, but this can be made simpler by living a more minimal life. Here’s how to organise your makeup and skincare in a way that would make Marie proud – and your life a lot easier!

1. Use a tray

Marie Kondo is a big fan of how you store your things, with trays being a particular favourite. Investing in some trays with raised edges, or even cutlery trays, will help you to keep your products neatly displayed and will also help you to see what you have and want to use, rather than just grabbing what’s closest.

2. Get colourful

One technique that Marie uses to organise a space is to group objects according to colour. When it comes to beauty products, it might be smarter to organise them into their respective categories (masks, lip balms, serums, lipsticks and so on) but, once they are in their correct groups, arrange them by colour, even if it’s just so they are aesthetically pleasing.

3. Put things in order

Another way to streamline not just your products but also your makeup and skincare routine is to display or store your products in the order that you would use them. This means that you can reduce the time it takes you to get ready because what you need next will be right next to the product you used before, and we love a good time-saving hack!

4. Clear out

Probably the most important way you can sort out your beauty products – according to Marie Kondo, anyway – is to have a major purge. Anything that you don’t use regularly, products that may be past their shelf life and anything that you don’t really love should be given or thrown away. If it doesn’t spark joy, it’s out. (But we’ll forgive you for holding on to those special-occasion perfumes!)
