Pro tools for a pro finish

If you are something of a beauty junkie – and even if you aren’t – you are bound to have seen pictures or videos of people using oval brushes to apply their foundation. They look very different from the standard brushes that we have become used to and can appear complicated, like something you’d expect to see a professional makeup artist whip out of their bag of tricks. They are, however, becoming more and more popular among pros and rookies alike, and they can seriously up your beauty game.

Oval brushes look something like a hairbrush and a spoon combined. They consist of thousands of fibres – a lot more than you would find in conventional brushes – and this makes them denser and the results much smoother. This means that blending your makeup perfectly with an oval brush is much easier than with a regular one. These brushes often come in sets that contain tools for eye shadow and blush as well. They give an airbrush-like finish with no harsh, telltale lines.

So how do you use them?

Despite looking quite complicated, oval brushes are actually very simple to use. All you do is apply your makeup to your face as you usually would. With foundation, you need a small blob of product on your nose, chin, cheeks and forehead. You then take your brush and work the product around your face in light, circular motions.

This will ensure even, flawless coverage. You can also build your cover by adding more afterwards and repeating the process. These are the perfect tools for achieving a finish that looks as natural, or over the top, as you want. Makeup-artist results with no experience required – that gets a thumbs up from us!
