When it comes to makeup, bright shades aren’t for everyone. That doesn’t mean that you can’t rock some seasonal shades, and pastel tones are always a hit in summer. Here are the colours you should wear, and how you should wear them.

Pick your palette

When it comes to pastel eye makeup, a good rule of thumb when deciding which colour to go with is to choose shades that complement your eyes. Soft lilacs and lavenders go well with hazel eyes, oranges and apricots with blue eyes, greens and blues with brown eyes, and plums and muted yellows with green eyes.

Perfect your canvas

Before you get to work applying your eye shadow and lipstick, you need to perfect your canvas, or your skin. The best foundation finish to go with pastel makeup is a dewy one, so make sure that your skin is well hydrated with serum and moisturiser and, after applying your makeup, set it with an illuminating setting spray.

Define the eyes

While you need to steer clear of liner that is too heavy and overpowering, you still need to make sure that your eye area is well defined. This will ensure that the pastel shades don’t make you appear washed out. Try using an eyeliner a few shades darker than the eye shadow rather than a heavy black or brown, paired with a coat of mascara.

Make them pop

Most eye shadows in pastel shades also have a matt finish. If you want to add more depth and shine, use a shimmery eye shadow in the same or a similar colour over the pastel one. This will also help to make the colour bolder and more pigmented.

Check your cheeks

When it comes to pastel makeup, focusing on the eye area is the best bet. When it comes to the cheeks, blush should be kept sheer, especially because of the tendency for it to be matt. You don’t want your face to appear ashy! Also, if you are wearing pastel makeup on your eyes, choose subtle shades for the rest of your face too.

Lastly the lips

If you want your eyes to be the focal point and have already applied a pastel shade to your lids, keep your lip colour to a minimum. This means opting for something sheer such as a gloss instead of a regular lipstick. If you are going with a nude eye shadow, then a bold pastel lip colour can be paired with a soft, sheer blush.
