How to make your fragrance stay on longer

Stéphanie Bakouche, in-house perfumer for L’Artisan Parfumeur, shares her secrets

By Good Housekeeping

Use these clever tips and tricks from perfumer Stéphanie Bakouche to help prolong the smell of your favourite fragrance:

1. Moisturise first

Layering a same-scented lotion before spritzing can ‘boost the aroma left behind, making it last,’ says Bakouche. A fragrance-free cream will also help scent ‘stick’ to skin.

2. Spray precisely

Target the warmest spots on your body, such as behind the knees and ears, the neck and the insides of elbows. Heat helps increase the fragrance’s strength.

3. Try a solid or oil

Concentrated forms of perfume ‘don’t dissipate as much as liquids with alcohol, which evaporate,’ Bakouche says. Wear solo or with spray for staying power.

4. Apply on hair

Fragrances will latch onto your hair strands and cling onto any styling products you’ve used, which will help create a long-lasting smell. Spritz the perfume onto a comb or brush rather than spraying it directly onto your hair, as the alcohol content may have a drying effect.

5. No rubbing

Though women are often seen rubbing their wrists together after applying perfume, the friction can actually taint some of the notes in the fragrance, causing it to fade faster.
