Prince George and Princess Charlotte

We have an idea what Prince George is getting for Christmas.

If a dose of festive cheer is what you’re after, A Berry Royal Christmas is just the ticket. In the programme, baking legend Mary Berry spent time with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they met volunteers from charitable organisations close to their hearts and planned a Christmas party to say thank you for all of their hard work.

The Christmas special was full of lovely moments from Kate and William having a roulade making contest mentored by Mary and Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain to the Duchess revealing her youngest son Prince Louis is a big fan of Mary Berry, with one of his first words being Mary.

One of the most poignant parts of the programme was when William took Mary to charity The Passage to speak with people who’ve been affected by homelessness. The royal, the baking legend and the group of people they met discussed everything from how being ignored and dehumanised is the most difficult part of living on the street to how The Passage provides people who are homeless with much needed support in the form of group activities and a safe space to share experiences.

At one point, conversation turned from that to what William will be giving his children for Christmas.

‘George has already written his list for Father Christmas,’ the Duke said, adding: ‘He loves his drawing, he’s a very good drawer so we might get him something to do with drawing, or football, he’s loving his football as well.’

When asked if that’s because he himself is an avid football fan, William replied:

‘I’m afraid so, I’m trying to not be too biased. I said you can support anyone but Chelsea, so naturally he supports Chelsea.’

Chatting aside, the Duke and Duchess were focused on throwing a festive party to thank charity staff and volunteers who dedicate their entire years to supporting society’s most vulnerable.

Addressing the guests and acknowledging their hard work over the Christmas period, William said:

‘Many of you here will pass it off as part of the job, and [say] you do it because you care and because you love what you’re doing, and that is so admirable and amazing but I think a lot of people – if they knew how much time you give up and the sacrifices you make… if they could stand here with a microphone they’d say thank you to you as well.’
