In their special baking programme, we learnt how Prince William tried to impress Kate Middleton in University.

If a dose of festive cheer is what you’re after, A Berry Royal Christmas is just the ticket. In the programme, baking legend Mary Berry spent time with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they met volunteers from charitable organisations close to their hearts and planned a Christmas party to say thank you for all of their hard work.

The Christmas special was full of lovely moments from Kate and William having a roulade making contest mentored by Mary and Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain to the Duchess revealing her youngest son Prince Louis is a big fan of Mary Berry, with one of his first words being Mary.

Of course, as party preparations were in full swing conversation regularly turned to food and drink, with Kate admitting that she’s ‘done a bit of waitressing’ when she was younger but was ‘terrible’.

When asked by Mary if William is a dab hand in the kitchen, Kate said:

‘In university days he used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that was when he was trying to impress me, Mary!’

The Prince’s speciality?

‘Things like Bolognese sauce,’ Kate revealed.

While William told Mary that nowadays ‘Catherine is definitely the one who cooks, not me’, his wife was more complimentary.

‘He sometimes does [cook] actually – he’s very good at breakfast,’ the Duchess said.

Chatting aside, the Duke and Duchess were focused on throwing a festive party to thank charity staff and volunteers who dedicate their entire years to supporting society’s most vulnerable.

Addressing the guests and acknowledging their hard work over the Christmas period, William said:

‘Many of you here will pass it off as part of the job, and [say] you do it because you care and because you love what you’re doing, and that is so admirable and amazing but I think a lot of people – if they knew how much time you give up and the sacrifices you make… if they could stand here with a microphone they’d say thank you to you as well.’
