Acne is something that most of us experience at some point in our lives, and it can be very debilitating. And pimples are not something that only teenagers have to deal with. Many adults are also prone to breakouts, and even full-blown acne, which can make them feel self-conscious and frustrated. While there are plenty of treatments available on the market, some of which may require a prescription from a dermatologist, they will only go so far if you are sleeping on a dirty pillowcase every night.

It might seem like the ultimate betrayal from the one thing guaranteed to bring you comfort each day, but pillows, like all things that regularly come into contact with your skin, need to be washed regularly, otherwise they could cause you to break out. It makes sense – your face is on your pillow for about eight hours a day, and during this time your skin regenerates and sheds, which means there are plenty of dead skin cells, sweat and oil from your hair imbedded in it. Nice thought … not! While this isn’t generally a problem for most people, for those who get pimples regularly, their pillowcase could be partly responsible.

Fortunately the solution to this is simple: dermatologists suggest that those who suffer from acne change their pillowcases at least once a week, but ideally more. Those with sensitive skin should also avoid perfumed fabric softeners, as they can lead to irritation. Invest in a few more pillowcases and keep them as clean as possible. Clear skin could be just a few sleeps away.
