Beauty trends come and go. Some of them come and change our lives for the better, such as highlighting and microblading, and some of them pass through our social-media feeds because they are, quite frankly, weird. A new trend on the scene – ‘slugging’ – has the beauty community divided and devotees looking rather slimy.

So what exactly is ‘slugging’ anyway? Basically it’s slathering a lot of Vaseline or petroleum jelly on your face after you have completed your regular night-time skincare routine. This is then meant to help ‘lock in’ the serum and moisturiser so that they can work their magic while you sleep, leaving you with baby-soft skin on waking (and leaving you looking like a slimy slug before hitting the hay).
While most people would cringe at the thought of this practice, more and more people are joining the ‘slugging’ fan club. There is even an online forum dedicated to it where people can get advice from others who swear by its skin-softening powers.

But what do dermatologists think of this strange new practice? Despite what you might think, they actually admit that it CAN help to retain moisture, which can benefit those who suffer from dry, flaky skin. In other words, this might be a skin saviour for those with dehydrated skin. Who would have thought?
So if you are one of those people whose skin suffers in the cold winter months, this might be a way to keep your skin happy and healthy. Just don’t sleep on your favourite pillowcase!
