10 steps to make your own hat stand

1. Use the 100-grit sandpaper to sand the dowels to remove roughness or splinters.

2. Cut pieces of masking tape with scissors and use the masking tape to tape off sections of each dowel that you want to leave unpainted.

3. Shake the Woodoc Colours in Opal, Seaweed, Clifton Grey or Beaufort Grey well (you can decide if you want to use one of the colours or all of them) and mix this with half a cup or less of the Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR Sealer in Matt/Clear in a paint tray and stir well. Remember, very little of this mixture is needed to paint a dowel.

4. Repeat this process with the other colours if you choose to use more than one colour. (With Woodoc Colours you can determine the amount and colour intensity you want according to your project’s requirements. You can add more drops to create a more intense colour.)

5. Paint a light coat of colour on each dowel with the paintbrush and leave it to dry thoroughly. Warmer conditions will decrease drying time.

6. Paint a second coat, leaving to dry completely and sand lightly after the first and second coats.

7. Remove the masking tape when the paint is completely dry.

8. Bunch all the dowels together and tie the riempies tightly around the top quarter of the grouping. Secure the riempies with a tight knot.

9. Finally spread the dowels open to create the DIY hat stand.
