Step-by-step: how to make a wooden doormat

10 simple steps how to make a wooden doormat

1. Lay out the 16 meranti wood batons side by side.

2. Drill a 6mm hole at the end of each baton, about 2,5cm from the ends and vertically centred.

3. Sand the batons.

4. Shake the Woodoc Colours in Sweet Grass well and mix it into the Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR Sealer in Matt/Clear. Stir the mixture well and apply one light coat to the wood batons with the paintbrush and leave them to dry thoroughly. When dry, sand lightly with 100-grit sandpaper.

5. Apply the second coat to darken the tone of the Woodoc Colours in Sweet Grass and leave to dry thoroughly.

6. When the second coat is dry, sand lightly with the 100-grit sandpaper.

7. Apply a third coat of sealer if desired and sand lightly with the 100-grit sandpaper once dry.

8. Thread the sisal rope through the wood batons, one baton at a time.

9. As you thread it, make a knot on either side of each baton to secure the wood batons.

10. That’s it – enjoy your DIY wooden doormat!
