Taste test: Low-fat Milk

Milk is a great source of calcium and a good way to meet your daily calcium needs. We tested eight brands off our supermarket shelves:

Rich and creamy

Our tasters loved the delicious creamy flavour and texture of Woolworths Organic Fresh Low Fat Milk (R22,45 for 2 litres) so much that they voted it tops. Rating: 8

 

Family-pleaser

Darling 2% Fresh Low Fat Milk (R16,99 for 2 litres) came a close second. Our tasters noted that although it was a little thin, it delivered a delicious milky flavour. Rating: 7

 

Splurge

Although our tasters found Clover 2% Low Fat Fresh Milk (R19,99 for 2 litres) wasn’t as creamy as some of its competitors, they thought it had an enjoyable flavour. Rating: 7

 

Also tested:

PnP

Although the flavour was deemed to be okay, PnP’s low-fat milk was rated as being watery.

Rating: 6

 

Fair Cape

Our tasters found Faircape to be a little thin, but were pleased with its milky flavour, and they liked the look of the bottle.

Checkers Housebrand

Our tasters found the flavour slightly watery, but enjoyed it nontheless.

Woolworths Essentials

Tasters noted that although this milk had a delightful milky-white appearance, it lacked depth in flavour.

Rating: 6

Woolworths Ayrshire

Free from added rBST hormone, antibiotics and animal by-products in the cows’ feed, this delicious, fresh-tasting milk got a good rating.

Price: R21,95
